We Wish You a Merry Christmas is a traditional English Christmas carol from the West Country, in the south-west of England. It belongs to the tradition of singers who went from house to house on winter evenings: they offered their good wishes, then asked for figgy pudding and promised not to leave until they had some. In 1935 the Bristol musician Arthur Warrell published a choral version that carried it far beyond its home region, until it became one of the most widely sung holiday songs in the world. Its chorus, which returns after every verse, is recognisable from the very first notes on the piano. Two levels for the same tune, so you can play it one notch higher every Christmas.
