Its best-known lyrics were written in Leipzig in 1824 by the organist and schoolteacher Ernst Anschütz, to a folk melody much older than the words. The song was not originally about Christmas: it praised the faithfulness of the fir tree, which stays green when winter strips the other trees bare. It was the rise of the Christmas tree in German homes, then across Europe, that turned it into a holiday song, and its melody travelled far beyond, even carrying \"The Red Flag\", the historic anthem of the British labour movement. Made of short phrases that return almost unchanged, it sits naturally on the accordion.
