"Les Anges dans nos campagnes", known in English as "Angels We Have Heard on High", is a traditional French Christmas carol, born of folk tradition, probably in the 18th century, and spread through the hymn books of the 19th century. It tells of the announcement to the shepherds, and its Latin refrain "Gloria in excelsis Deo" echoes the song of the angels in the Gospel of Luke. Translated into English in 1862 by Bishop James Chadwick, it travelled around the world and is sung today in churches, schools and at Christmas gatherings in many countries. Its whole character lies in the long "Gloria" run, a garland of notes descending in successive waves: on the accordion, the bellows carry it in a single breath, while the left hand supports the melody with simple, steady chords. Just right for Christmas Eve, from the first verse to the last Gloria.
