Et si tu n'existais pas is one of Joe Dassin's best-known songs, released in 1975. The music is by Toto Cutugno and Pasquale Losito, to Italian lyrics by Vito Pallavicini, and the French adaptation is by Claude Lemesle and Pierre Delanoë, the same team of writers and composers behind L'Été indien. Carried by Dassin's deep, unhurried voice, this declaration that imagines life without the other person has become a classic of French chanson, covered by many artists and handed down from one generation to the next. It is a slow ballad whose melody moves in long, connected phrases: on the accordion, the bellows hold them without a break and give the chorus its breadth, while the left hand lays down a steady accompaniment that lets the right hand sing. A song everyone starts humming within the first few bars.
