Jingle Bells is a song by the American James Lord Pierpont, published in Boston in 1857 as One Horse Open Sleigh and renamed two years later. Its lyrics say nothing about Christmas and describe sleigh races in the snow, yet it became one of the most sung holiday tunes in the world, and was even played in space in December 1965 by the Gemini 6 astronauts. Its refrain of repeated notes, which everyone hums from the very first bar, is instantly recognisable on the piano. A first Christmas piece to play while the whole house sings along.
