We Wish You a Merry Christmas is a traditional Christmas carol from the West Country, in the south-west of England. It comes from the custom of singers going from door to door over the holidays: after wishing everyone a merry Christmas and a happy new year, they demanded figgy pudding and warned that they would not leave until they had some. It was the choral arrangement published in 1935 by the Bristol musician Arthur Warrell that carried it far beyond its home region, to the point of making it one of the most widely sung holiday songs in the world. Its bouncy melody, with a refrain that comes back after every verse, sounds cheerful on the accordion. Just the tune to welcome guests on Christmas Eve.
