Amazing Grace is a hymn written in 1772 by John Newton, a former slave trader turned clergyman, and sung since the 1830s to the American tune “New Britain”. Its four phrases in three-four time, built on just five notes, make it one of the easiest melodies to remember, played at weddings and funerals alike, and even on Scottish bagpipes.
On the accordion, it is a bellows piece before it is a finger piece: the held notes at the end of each phrase need steady pressure, and bellows changes belong at the breaths, never in the middle of a note. The left hand marks the slow waltz, bass then chord, and learns to stay discreet under the melody. This level 2/5 score is an ideal first piece for working on tone and phrasing, and it is the tune people will ask for when they want “something everyone knows”.
