Angels We Have Heard on High is the English version of “Les Anges dans nos campagnes”, a popular 18th-century French carol that crossed the Channel in the 19th century. The whole piece rests on a contrast: simple, steady verses, then the “Gloria in excelsis Deo” refrain, whose long melisma tumbles down over several bars.

On the piano, that cascade is both the charm and the work of the piece: the right hand runs through stepwise notes that must stay even and smoothly joined, while the left hand accompanies without ever covering the tune. Moving from the calm verse to the fuller refrain also teaches you to shape dynamics within a single piece.
