Silent Night, Stille Nacht in German, is an Austrian Christmas carol written by the young curate Joseph Mohr and set to music by Franz Xaver Gruber, a village schoolteacher and organist. It was first sung on Christmas Eve 1818 in the church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, near Salzburg, with nothing but a guitar for accompaniment. Families of Tyrolean singers then carried it on their tours across Europe and as far as the United States, and today it has been translated into more than 300 languages; soldiers are even said to have sung it from one trench to the other during the Christmas truce of 1914. Its peaceful melody, made of short phrases that answer one another without ever hurrying, gives the accordion all the time it needs to sing. The one carol that even people who never sing know by heart.
