"Funiculì Funiculà" is a Neapolitan song composed in 1880 by Luigi Denza, to lyrics in Neapolitan dialect by Peppino Turco, to celebrate the opening of the first funicular railway on Mount Vesuvius. Presented the same year at the Piedigrotta festival, it was an immediate success and sold more than a million copies as sheet music. It became so popular that Richard Strauss quoted it in his symphonic fantasy "Aus Italien", believing it to be a folk tune, and it went on to become a staple of the tenor repertoire, all the way to Luciano Pavarotti. Its bouncy rhythm, catchy chorus and the contrast between verse and chorus make it a piece made for the accordion, where the bellows give the melody all its drive.
