Let It Be is a Beatles song written by Paul McCartney and credited, like all their joint compositions, to Lennon/McCartney. McCartney came up with it in 1968 after a dream in which his mother, Mary, who had died when he was fourteen, appeared to tell him to let things be. Recorded in January 1969, it was released as a single in March 1970 and then gave its name to the band's last album, which came out a few weeks after their break-up was announced, making it for many the Beatles' farewell song. Its calm melody, close to a hymn, moves in simple phrases towards a chorus everyone joins in on, and finds its voice naturally on the accordion. A piece to play softly at the end of the evening, when everyone already knows the words.
