Süßer die Glocken nie klingen is a 19th-century German Christmas carol: Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger, a pastor and school director in Droyßig, wrote its words to the tune of a Thuringian folk song known before 1826, and the carol first appeared in print in 1860. Since everyone already knew the melody, it spread very quickly and was found in many songbooks by the end of the century; it has remained one of the best-loved Christmas songs in the German-speaking world, sung every winter by choirs and pop stars alike. Its melody sways gently, like the bells the words describe, and its simple phrases come back often enough to stick after a single listen. A first Christmas song to ring out at home, even after only a few months on the accordion.
