O Come All Ye Faithful is the English version of Adeste Fideles, a Latin Christmas hymn whose earliest known manuscripts, copied around 1750, are in the hand of John Francis Wade, an English Catholic copyist living in Douai, in northern France; both words and tune are often attributed to him, though without certainty. The English text sung today is by the priest Frederick Oakeley, who translated it in 1841, and French speakers know it as “Peuple fidèle”. Sung in dozens of languages, it accompanies midnight Mass as well as choir concerts, carried by its refrain that comes back three times, rising each time: “Venite adoremus”. Its broad, solemn melody sounds on the accordion like a small organ. The carol saved for the end of the evening, when everyone stands up for the refrain.
