Es ist ein Ros entsprungen is a German Christmas carol from the late 16th century: its text appears around 1587 in a manuscript from the Charterhouse of Trier, and was then printed in 1599 in a hymnal from Speyer; the rose blooming in the depth of winter, sprung from the stem of Jesse, is an old image of the birth of Christ. It was Michael Praetorius's four-part harmonisation, published in 1609, that gave it the form choirs still sing today, and the carol has travelled the world, notably in English as "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming"; Brahms even drew one of his last chorale preludes for organ from it. Its melody unfolds in long, calm phrases with a slightly archaic colour, well suited to the sustained sound of the accordion. A tune to play softly as the house falls asleep after Christmas Eve dinner.
