La Mer is a song by Charles Trenet, who wrote the lyrics and composed the music with the pianist Albert Lasry. The idea is said to have come to him in 1943, on a train running along the Étang de Thau, and he recorded it himself in 1946, after a first version sung by Roland Gerbeau. Adapted into English as Beyond the Sea, which Bobby Darin made famous in 1959, it has become one of the most covered French songs in the world, and films have never stopped bringing it back. Its melody, moving in successive waves before opening onto a chorus everyone hums, is carried quite naturally by the accordion. A piece that brings summer into the room, even in the depths of winter.
