The Waltz of the Flowers belongs to the second act of The Nutcracker, the Tchaikovsky ballet first performed in Saint Petersburg in December 1892. In the Land of Sweets, the flowers dance after a long harp introduction, and the waltz has become one of the classical pieces heard most often at Christmas, in concert halls and in films alike.
On the accordion, it is a true concert waltz: the main theme, given to the horns in the orchestra, needs broad, steady bellows, while the left hand keeps the three-beat sway going without making it heavy. The long rising phrases of the second theme force you to plan bellows changes well in advance, and the modulations call for flexibility in the basses. This level 4/5 score, 3 pages long, is a programme piece for experienced accordionists, a natural choice for a Christmas concert.
