Hallelujah is a song by Leonard Cohen, released in 1984 on the album Various Positions, born out of several years of rewriting and dozens of abandoned verses. Almost unnoticed when it came out, it was brought back to life by John Cale's version in 1991 and then by Jeff Buckley's in 1994, whose stripped-back recording remains for many the definitive one, before film and countless covers turned it into a worldwide standard. Its slow, steady chord progression, carried by a three-beat sway, sits well under the fingers on the accordion: the bellows hold the long harmonies and let the chorus breathe without ever forcing the tempo.
